AVIF (AV1 Image File Format)

AVIF is a next-generation image format based on the open-source AV1 video codec. It delivers superior compression efficiency, often 50% smaller than JPEG and 20% smaller than WebP at equivalent quality. AVIF supports HDR, wide color gamut, transparency, and animation.

Technical Details

AVIF uses AV1 intra-frame coding with advanced transforms and prediction modes. It supports 8, 10, and 12-bit color depth, 4:4:4 chroma, HDR10, and PQ/HLG transfer functions.

History

AVIF was finalized by the Alliance for Open Media in February 2019. Chrome added support in 2020, and Safari followed in 2023, completing major browser coverage.
