Mid-Side Processing

Mid-Side Audio Processing

A technique separating stereo audio into center (mid) and sides signals for independent processing.

Technical Detail

Audio mid-side processing configurations range from mono (1 channel) to immersive formats like Dolby Atmos (object-based, up to 128 tracks). Stereo (2 channels) creates spatial width through inter-aural differences. 5.1 surround (6 channels: L, R, C, LFE, LS, RS) is the cinema standard. For web delivery, stereo MP3/AAC is standard; for podcasts, mono at 64-128 kbps is recommended to reduce file size without noticeable quality loss since spoken word doesn't benefit from stereo separation.

Example

```
Audio channel configurations:
  Mono (1.0)     — 1 channel  — podcasts, phone calls
  Stereo (2.0)   — 2 channels — music, web audio
  Surround (5.1) — 6 channels — cinema, gaming
  Atmos (7.1.4)  — 12 channels — immersive audio
File size impact: stereo = 2× mono at same bitrate
  Podcast tip: mono 64 kbps ≈ stereo 128 kbps quality
